So You Need to Build a Website...

You've thought about it for a really long time. 

My business needs a website.

But you really don't know where to start. The very thought of building your own site makes your brain meltdown. Wordpress. Squarespace. Weebly. Colors. FONTS. TWO COLUMN. PARALLAX SCROLLING. AAAAAAARGH!!! 

How do I know? I've been there.

I am not exaggerating when I say it took me over two years to build my own personal site. Years ago I began with Blogger as I just wanted to keep family and friends up to date with my theatre gigs. But as my portfolio grew, times changed, and online website utilities became more and more user-friendly, I decided it was worth it to build my own website portfolio.

So I got a Squarespace account and it sat. For two years.

But in those two years, through a marketing assistant job, I was able to train on a variety of platforms and build sites for others. So that's all you really have to do. Go and train for a few years in website design and then come back to your own website and you'll be ready to rock and roll.

I'm joking.

My point is, I know what it's like to be frustrated, looking at a blank website page, not knowing what to do. But that's where we work together to find what's going to work for you. Two heads are better than one. 

What I do is to first help someone decide how complicated their site needs to be. I can honestly get a site up and running in a day if all you need is a place to put your face and a contact form. Sometimes that's all a person needs, you know? Other people just want a blog and a shopping cart to sell some products. Also doable. Actors need a gallery to show their work. And others still need a robust ecommerce tool. All it really takes is a conversation. 

With that in mind, the next step is for you, the client, to research what site designs you like. The big guys (Squarespace, Wordpress, Etc. ) have gotten really good displaying samples on their site, so that's a good place to start. But it's also really helpful to research competitors in your industry, and also spend a few hours dinking around the internet to see what strikes your eyeballs. We all spend a couple of hours on the internet weekly anyway (at LEAST), now's the time to leverage that time into something you can use for your business.

Once you've got those two things down, all that's needed is to select your website host, choose your domain, pick a template, and NOW you're ready to rock and roll. The fonts and colors and all that will fall into line shortly thereafter. That's the one thing you and I will have to go through the options. There are a lot, but everyone usually has a couple of families they're particular to.

Sure you can have someone build you a great website from scratch, but that can cost you in the thousands of dollars. And many, many times, I've run into people who've hired someone to build their site, and then when they log in, they aren't even able to manage it. So not only do I like to keep costs low, but I teach people how make their website and social media work for them in a practical way.  I'm just a practical kind of person.
